Volume. Convert thickness to feet first — 4 inches is 0.333 ft, 5 inches is 0.417 ft, 6 inches is 0.5 ft. Multiply length x width x thickness, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A 16 x 40 ft driveway at 4 inches is 640 x 0.333 / 27, about 7.9 cubic yards before any waste allowance. Contractors add an allowance for spillage and uneven subgrade; that's normal.

Cost. Multiply square footage by the tier that matches your finish. Concrete Network's driveway tiers: plain $5 to $8, basic $8 to $14, mid-range $14 to $21, high-end $21+. Patio tiers: plain $5 to $8, simple $8 to $11, custom $11 to $18, elaborate $18+. Stamped work: $10 to $14 basic, $14 to $20 mid-range, $20+ high-end. Add demolition at about $1 per square foot if there's an existing slab.

Joint spacing. Multiply slab thickness in inches by 24 to 36 and read the answer as feet: a 4-inch slab gives 8 to 12 feet, and NRMCA's own example is about 10 feet. Cap at 15 feet regardless. Then check panel shape — length should not exceed 1.5 times width, and L-shaped panels should be avoided.

None of this replaces a site visit. Access, soil, slope, and haul distance are real costs a calculator cannot see. Use the numbers to spot a quote that is far outside the range and to ask why.

Check the joint plan against the arithmetic

It takes thirty seconds and catches the most common cause of the cracking you'd otherwise be arguing about in year two.

Price the same square footage across all bids

Measure it yourself once. Bidders sometimes measure differently, and the per-square-foot comparison collapses if the areas don't match.

Expect a waste allowance on yardage

Ordering exactly the calculated volume risks running short mid-pour, which creates a cold joint. A modest overage is good practice, not padding.

Add sealing to lifetime cost estimates

Professional sealing at $1 to $2 per square foot recurs; a one-time install figure understates decorative concrete.

Don't calculate structural thickness yourself

Load, soil and climate determine it. Use 4 inches as the published driveway minimum and let a professional justify anything different.

Treat calculator output as a range, not a price

Concrete Network's own driveway total spans $3,200 to $13,000. Anything inside that band is a conversation, not a red flag.
