Skylights in short
Skylight work falls into four jobs: installing a new skylight (cutting a fresh opening in the roof and framing it), replacing an existing one in the same opening, reflashing a skylight that leaks but is otherwise sound, and repairing hardware like motors, blinds or seals. Replacement in an existing opening is the cheapest and fastest of the big jobs - VELUX puts a typical single skylight replacement at around two hours of work, plus any interior finishing. Cutting a new opening costs more because it involves framing, drywall and paint as well as roofing.
Fixr puts the national average skylight installation at about $1,523, with most projects landing between $1,080 and $1,966 and the full range running from roughly $647 to $13,582 for large or complex jobs. Material cost alone is around $229-$417 for a tubular unit, $295-$537 for a fixed skylight and $574-$1,044 for a ventilating one. The gap between the average and the high end is almost never the skylight itself - it's cutting and framing a new opening, electrical work, and finishing the interior shaft.
