Insulation in short
Residential insulation work breaks into five jobs: attic insulation, wall insulation, crawl space and basement insulation, spray foam application, and air sealing. Air sealing comes first. The EPA's ENERGY STAR program explicitly recommends completing an attic air sealing project before adding attic insulation, because insulation slows heat conduction but does almost nothing to stop air leaking through gaps.
Whole-home insulation runs about $2,000-$7,400 nationally, averaging roughly $4,700 for a 2,000 sq ft home, per Fixr's January 2026 cost data. Blown-in insulation costs about $1.65-$3.80 per square foot installed, and spray foam is the expensive option at roughly $2.75-$6.50 per square foot in new construction and $3.15-$7.50 in existing walls.
