Ranking methodology

How we rank the best roofers.

Every city ranking is scored on the same transparent 100-point rubric — verifiable facts, not opinions, and never pay-to-rank. Here's exactly what we measure and why.

HomeMatchup ranks the best roofers in each city on a 100-point rubric built from eight verifiable factors: licensing and insurance (20), reviews and ratings (25), manufacturer certifications (15), years in business (10), warranty (10), BBB record (8), storm and insurance expertise (6), and responsiveness (6). The published score sets the order. No roofer can pay to rank higher.

The rubric

The 100-point scoring rubric.

Every eligible roofer is scored on the same eight factors. Each point traces back to a source we can verify.

Factor Points What we verify
Licensing & insurance 20 Active state contractor license (verified on the state board), general liability, and workers’ comp on file. This is also a hard gate — no valid license where one is required, no "Verified" badge.
Reviews & ratings 25 Google rating weighted by how positive it is, review volume, how recent the reviews are, and whether ratings hold up across Google and the BBB.
Manufacturer certifications 15 Top-tier credentials (GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster) verified on the manufacturer’s locator. Only ~2–3% of contractors hold one.
Years in business 10 A verifiable local track record — because a warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it.
Warranty offered 10 A written workmanship warranty (10+ years scores highest) on top of the manufacturer’s system warranty.
BBB rating & complaints 8 BBB grade and, more importantly, whether complaints were acknowledged and resolved.
Storm & insurance expertise 6 Documented hail, wind, and insurance-claim experience — the difference-maker in storm markets.
Scope, financing & response 6 Financing options, breadth of services, and how quickly they respond to homeowners.
Total 100 Converted to a badge tier and used to order each city ranking.
Before scoring

Who even makes the list.

A roofer must clear these gates before we score them. Fail one and they’re excluded — or shown with no badge.

Valid license

An active contractor license where the state requires one — verified on the state board, not taken on faith.

Real reviews

At least one verifiable review from a real customer. No reviews we can’t stand behind.

Clean standing

No unresolved licensing or legal disciplinary action on record at the time we check.

Badge tiers

What the badges mean.

The score maps to a public badge so you can read trust at a glance.

Elite
90–100 pts

Top-tier certification, verified license and insurance, and strong recent reviews. Our editor’s pick tier.

Top Rated
80–89 pts

Strong verified reviews and credentials — may not carry a top-tier manufacturer certification.

Verified
70–79 pts

Passes every eligibility gate: license, insurance, and real reviews all confirmed. Our trust floor.

How we make money

Rankings are earned, not bought.

Homeowners pay nothing. Roofers may pay us a referral fee when we match them with a homeowner through the get-matched form — but that never changes the editorial ranking order, which is set only by the 100-point rubric above. Any paid or partner placement is labeled “Sponsored” and kept separate from the earned ranking.

No pay-to-rank Sponsored is always labeled Data is timestamped
Claim or correct a listing

Our data comes from public, verifiable sources — state license boards, insurance records, manufacturer certification locators, the BBB, and public review platforms — and every ranking page is stamped with the date the data was last checked. If a fact about a company is out of date, claim the listing and we’ll verify and fix it.

We score every eligible local roofer on a 100-point rubric across eight verifiable factors — licensing and insurance, reviews, manufacturer certifications, years in business, warranty, BBB record, storm/insurance expertise, and responsiveness. No. Editorial rank is earned by the rubric, never bought. If we ever show a paid or partner placement, it is clearly labeled "Sponsored" and separated from the earned ranking — never mixed in.
From public, verifiable sources: state contractor-license boards, general-liability and workers’-comp records, manufacturer certification locators, the BBB, and public review platforms like Google. Every data point is timestamped so you can see how current it is.
Homeowners pay nothing. Roofers can pay us a referral fee when we send them a good match through the get-matched form. That referral relationship never changes the editorial ranking order, which is set only by the rubric.
Claim your profile and send us the correction. If a license, certification, or review record is out of date, we verify and update it. Factual accuracy is the whole point of the methodology.
We re-check licensing, insurance, certifications, and reviews on a recurring cycle and stamp each page with the date the data was last verified. A good score has to be earned again — it is not a one-time stamp.
