Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Deck style is mostly expressed through railing, decking color and level changes — and those are the three most expensive variables. A modern deck's cable or glass railing runs $115 to $210 per linear foot installed against $30 to $50 for wood, and a covered outdoor room runs $40 to $100 per square foot against $10 to $30 for a plain platform deck.
Modern and minimalist decks lean on horizontal cable or glass railing and hidden fasteners. That look is expensive: cable railing at $115 to $175 per linear foot and glass at $140 to $210, against wood at $30 to $50. Budget the railing before you commit to the aesthetic.
Traditional and rustic decks use wood railing and visible fasteners, and they're the cheapest to build. Wood decking at $15 to $25 per square foot installed for pressure-treated or $19 to $29 for cedar keeps a rustic deck genuinely affordable — with the standing $2 to $5 per square foot restaining cost every two to three years.
Coastal. Aesthetics aside, coastal decks have a hard technical requirement: fasteners and connectors exposed to salt water or located within 300 feet of a salt water shoreline must be stainless steel grade 304 or 316. That is not optional and it is not cheap. Ask any coastal bidder to state the fastener grade in writing.
Covered outdoor rooms. At $40 to $100 per square foot this is the most expensive deck style and the one closest to being an addition. It will involve more structural review and, if the recouped-cost picture matters to you, remember deck additions return roughly 63% to 65.8% of cost regardless of how impressive they look.
