Door comparisons

Prehung vs. slab. This is a condition question, not a preference. Prehung includes a new frame, hinges and threshold, so it corrects an opening that is out of square or has rot. A slab reuses the existing frame and is meaningfully cheaper and faster. If you can push a thumbnail into the jamb, the answer is prehung.

Steel vs. fiberglass. Steel is generally the lower-cost, higher-strength option; fiberglass resists denting and rot and needs less upkeep. Both outlast wood in exposed positions on published lifespan estimates. Neither is universally correct — pick based on exposure, budget and how much the door's appearance matters.

Sliding vs. French patio doors. Sliders take no floor swing space and are usually cheaper; French doors give a wider clear opening and better looks but need room to swing and have more weather-sealing points. In a small room, a slider is often just the right answer.

Repair vs. replace. Default to repair for latching, sticking and draft complaints. Replace when there is rot in the frame or sill, a warped or delaminated slab, or an opening that has gone out of square. That framing is more useful than any percentage rule.

How to choose

Test the frame before choosing prehung or slab

Press the lower jamb and sill with your thumb, and check the gaps around the closed door for consistency. Uneven gaps mean the opening has moved.

Compare quotes on the same scope

A slab quote will always beat a prehung quote. Make sure you're not comparing two different projects and calling one a better deal.

Weigh floor space for patio doors

Measure the swing arc before choosing French doors. If it collides with furniture you actually use, the slider is the better door.

Storm doors: check the main door first

A storm door over a dark-colored, sun-exposed door can trap heat. Confirm the main door manufacturer's guidance before adding one.
