A cost estimator's job is to tell you whether you're in a $1,500 conversation or a $6,000 one, so you can spot a quote that's wildly out of range. It cannot account for rot behind your trim, an out-of-square opening, or local labor rates. Use it as a sanity check, not a budget.

Measurement and handing tools are more genuinely useful, because ordering errors are common and expensive. Getting handing written down correctly before anyone orders is worth more than any estimate.

The most valuable tool is the least technical: a side-by-side comparison of quotes broken into the same line items — unit, labor, hardware, glass options, trim, paint, disposal, rot contingency. Most homeowners who feel ripped off after a door job were comparing totals.

How to choose

Use estimators for range, not budget

They can't see your opening. Treat the output as a check on whether a quote is plausible.

Nail down handing before ordering

Write hinge side and swing direction as a plain sentence. Supplier conventions differ, and a wrong-handed door is a delay plus a restocking fee.

Build the comparison table before the bids arrive

Decide your line items first, then make each bidder fill them in. It stops anyone hiding scope in a lump sum.

Check estimator inputs match your job

Prehung vs. slab and glass options move the number most. If the tool doesn't ask, its output isn't about your project.
