Read the fire numbers as scale, not as personal probability. Roughly 51,000 incidents a year across well over a hundred million housing units is a serious national problem and a small annual risk to any one home. It justifies AFCI protection, GFCI testing and permitted work. It does not justify accepting a five-figure quote under time pressure.

The arcing-fault figure is the most decision-relevant one: over 28,000 residential fires annually and more than $700 million in property damage, per ESFI. That is the specific failure mode AFCI devices address, at roughly $35–$60 per breaker per This Old House. Very few home safety spends have that ratio.

ESFI also cites CPSC data on receptacles being involved in around 5,300 fires annually, causing roughly forty deaths and over a hundred injuries — the reason discolored or warm outlets deserve attention rather than a wait-and-see.

On cost, use published ranges as a sanity check on the quotes in front of you, not as a target price. Regional labor rates, utility involvement and access drive real variance. A quote outside the published range is not automatically wrong — but it is a question worth asking out loud.

How to choose

Use national figures for scale, local quotes for price
Cost data tells you whether a quote is unusual. It does not tell you what your job should cost.
Prefer primary and industry sources
NFPA, CPSC and ESFI for safety; established cost guides for price. Contractor blogs citing each other are not evidence.
Check the year on any statistic
Fire and cost data lag. A figure without a year or a source is not usable.
Weight the arcing-fault number
It is the statistic most directly connected to a cheap, available mitigation.
Do not let statistics substitute for a diagnosis
