EV charger codes
NEC Article 625 contains most of the National Electrical Code provisions that apply to EV charging equipment, and the NEC treats EV charging infrastructure as a continuous load. But the NEC only binds you once your state or city adopts a specific edition of it, and adoption varies - so the requirement that actually applies to your install is the one your local authority enforces, not a national rule.
The Department of Energy's guidance is direct on this: charging equipment installations must comply with local and state codes and regulations, EV charging infrastructure is considered a continuous load by the NEC, and NEC Article 625 contains most of the information applicable to charging equipment. Your electrical contractor is expected to know and apply the appropriate NEC edition for a safe, code-compliant install.
"Continuous load" is the part with the biggest practical consequence. It changes how the circuit and overcurrent protection are sized relative to the charger's rated current, which is why a Level 2 charger's amperage rating and the breaker feeding it are not the same number. Your electrician does this calculation; you don't need to, but you should expect them to explain it.
Which code applies to you is a local question. States and cities adopt NEC editions on their own schedules, and some amend them. Some jurisdictions have also adopted "EV-ready" or "EV-capable" requirements for new construction and major renovations. We cannot tell you what applies at your address, and neither can a contractor who hasn't checked - ask which code edition your building department currently enforces.
AFDC also notes that in many areas a site installation plan must be submitted to the permitting authority for approval before installation begins. If your contractor treats a home charger as a same-day walk-in job with no paperwork, ask them to confirm that in writing with your building department.
