EV charger comparisons
Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet and adds roughly 2 to 5 miles of range per hour, per ENERGY STAR. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit and adds about 10 to 20 miles per hour by ENERGY STAR's estimate, or approximately 25 miles per hour by DOE's AFDC figure. DC fast charging delivers roughly 100 to 200-plus miles in 30 minutes but is not a home technology.
Level 1 vs Level 2. The speed gap is real but so is the question of whether you need it. ENERGY STAR's rule of thumb: if you drive under about 40 miles a day, or you have a plug-in hybrid, a 120-volt Level 1 charger is enough. Above that, with a fully electric car, they point you to 240-volt Level 2. AFDC frames Level 2 as being for drivers with irregular schedules, long commutes, or large batteries that can't refill in a typical overnight dwell.
Level 2 is also somewhat more efficient - ENERGY STAR states it is on average about 10 percent more efficient than Level 1 while adding roughly four times the miles per hour of charging. Over years of charging that efficiency is worth something, though it's rarely the deciding factor.
Hardwired vs plug-in. Bob Vila puts hardwired at $850-$1,800 and plug-in at $1,000-$2,200 for materials and labor. Plug-in is easier to replace or take with you; hardwiring is sometimes required for higher-output units and is generally the more permanent, tidier install. Neither is automatically safer - what matters is that a licensed electrician did it to code.
Home vs public. AFDC notes most EV drivers charge overnight at home on Level 1 or Level 2. Public DC fast charging is a road-trip tool: up to 500 kW at the high end, delivering roughly 100 to 200-plus miles in 30 minutes. It is not something you install at a house, and any contractor offering to is not describing residential work.
Choosing EV Chargers between the options
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
- Measure your actual daily miles first ENERGY STAR's 40-mile-a-day threshold is the cleanest decision rule available. Check your odometer for a week before spending anything.
- Compare charging speed to your parked hours, not to other chargers If the car sits for 12 hours overnight, Level 1 at 2-5 miles per hour still adds 24-60 miles. That may be your whole commute.
- Don't pay for amperage your car can't accept The vehicle's onboard charger caps AC charging speed. A 19.2 kW wall unit does nothing for a car that accepts 7.2 kW.
- Pick plug-in if you might move At a $150-$400 price difference either way, portability is a legitimate tiebreaker for renters and likely movers.
- Ignore DC fast charging for home planning DOE lists Level 3 hardware at $12,000-$35,000 with installations that can exceed $50,000. It is not a residential product.
