EV charger components
A home Level 2 setup is four things: the charging unit itself (technically EVSE), a dedicated 240-volt circuit with its own breaker, the connection method (hardwired or a plug-in receptacle), and enough panel capacity to support it. The unit is $600 to $1,200, wiring runs $6 to $12 per linear foot, and a new breaker box if needed is $1,500 to $4,000.
The EVSE. The wall box isn't really a charger - the charger is in the car. The wall unit supplies AC power and handles the safety handshake. ENERGY STAR notes Level 2 units require a heavy-duty 240-volt circuit like an electric dryer's, and that units wired to 50 amps charge faster. AFDC puts residential Level 2 output at up to 30 amps delivering 7.2 kW, with the broader Level 2 class spanning roughly 7.2 to 19.2 kW.
The circuit. A dedicated 240-volt branch circuit with its own breaker, sized by your electrician using the NEC's continuous-load rules. Nothing else should share it. Wiring cost tracks distance at $6 to $12 per linear foot.
The connection. Hardwired or plug-in. Bob Vila puts hardwired at $850-$1,800 and plug-in at $1,000-$2,200 including labor. Plug-in makes swapping the unit easier; some higher-output units must be hardwired. Check the manufacturer's specification before you choose.
Panel capacity. AFDC notes some homes have insufficient electrical capacity for Level 2 equipment, though a qualified electrician can add circuits to accommodate it. If a service or panel upgrade is needed, budget $1,500-$4,000 for a new breaker box. Also worth knowing: some setups use load-sharing so two chargers split one circuit, at $1,000-$1,500 for a dual charger with power sharing.
Choosing EV Chargers components

- Match the unit's amperage to what your panel can actually carry Buying a 48-amp charger for a panel that can support 30 amps means a panel upgrade you may not want to pay for.
- Confirm outdoor rating if it's going outside AFDC says outdoor installation and charging in rain are safe - with outdoor-rated equipment. Indoor-rated units mounted outside are a real hazard.
- Look for a nationally recognized test lab mark ENERGY STAR warns that not all EV chargers sold are safety certified, including some from large online and storefront retailers.
- Decide hardwired vs plug-in before ordering It changes the price ($850-$1,800 hardwired versus $1,000-$2,200 plug-in) and it may be dictated by the model you pick.
- Ask about load management before upgrading the panel Power-sharing and load-management features sometimes let you avoid a $1,500-$4,000 panel job. Ask if your setup qualifies.
