Start with arithmetic, not enthusiasm. If you drive 30 miles a day and the car is plugged in for 12 hours, Level 1 at 2 to 5 miles of range per hour restores 24 to 60 miles overnight. That covers you. Spending $546 to $1,374 to solve a problem you don't have is the most common mistake in home charging.

The case for Level 2 gets strong when any of these are true: you regularly drive well past 40 miles a day, your car sits plugged in for only a few hours, you have a large battery that can't refill overnight on Level 1, or two EVs share one parking spot. AFDC frames it the same way — irregular schedules, long commutes, big batteries.

Then check the panel. AFDC notes some homes have insufficient electrical capacity for Level 2, though an electrician can add circuits. That changes the decision for a lot of households, and it should.

Renters and condo owners face a different problem entirely — permission, metering and who pays.
