The home charging project runs in order: work out whether Level 1 is enough, check your panel, choose a safety-certified unit, permit and install with a licensed electrician, then optimize your utility rate. Charging itself is cheap — AFDC's example works out to about 3 cents per mile and roughly $6 for a full 200-mile charge at 10.7 cents per kWh.

Choosing a level. ENERGY STAR's threshold is about 40 miles a day, and the Level 1 cordset that came with the car costs nothing. Read the comparison guide before the shopping guide — this is the step that saves the most money.

Checking the panel. AFDC notes some homes have insufficient capacity for Level 2 but a qualified electrician can add circuits. Get this assessed in person before you buy hardware, because it can add $1,500 to $4,000.

Permitting and installing. AFDC states installations must comply with local and state codes, that permits may be required, and that in many areas a site plan must be approved first. Use a certified electrical contractor and safety-certified equipment — ENERGY STAR warns that not everything on sale is certified.

Cutting the running cost. AFDC's worked example: 10.7 cents per kWh and 27 kWh per 100 miles gives about 3 cents a mile, or roughly $6 to fully charge a 200-mile EV. Actual cost depends on your rate, and AFDC notes some utilities offer residential time-of-use rates or other incentives for charging equipment owners. Ask yours — shifting charging to off-peak hours is often the largest single lever on your bill.
