Published 2026 flooring cost data is wide and inconsistent by design, because it aggregates jobs of very different scope. Reported installed averages run around $12.50 per square foot nationally, with a 500-square-foot job averaging about $3,067 and a typical range of $1,518-$4,706. Individual material ranges are wider still - carpet alone is reported at $1.36-$13.58 per square foot.
Cost data sites collect reported job totals, not standardized scopes. One "hardwood installation" data point may include tear-out and subfloor repair while the next is bare labor on a clean substrate. That is why the same material shows up at $6-$12 per square foot in one dataset and $9-$23 in another. Neither is wrong; they're counting different things.
Use ranges as boundaries, not predictions. When published sources put solid hardwood at $9-$23 per square foot installed and engineered at $8-$14, the useful information is the overlap and the spread - not a midpoint you can quote back at a contractor.
Regional examples show how much geography matters. For a 200-square-foot room, published figures include roughly $686 for carpet, $2,258 for ceramic tile, $2,017 for hardwood and $517 for sheet vinyl. Those relative gaps are more durable than the absolute numbers.
When you read any flooring statistic, ask three questions: what scope is included, what year is the data from, and is it a national average or a local one. Most misleading flooring numbers fail at least one of those.
Choosing flooring what the data says
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
