A standby generator is a serviced machine, not an appliance. You will interact with the installing dealer far more than with the manufacturer. A mid-tier brand with a responsive local dealer beats a premium brand whose nearest service tech is three hours away and books out four weeks in a storm.
Market share tells you about distribution, not quality. Generac's own site says 8 in 10 homeowners with backup power have chosen Generac. That means parts and dealers are easy to find - a genuine advantage - but it doesn't tell you how a specific model performs.
Compare on things you can verify: the model's published noise rating (typical home generators run 60 to 80 decibels, and Bob Vila cites one 26 kW Kohler model at 56 to 67 dB), the stated engine type and fuel options, and the manufacturer's own written warranty document. Get the warranty PDF for the exact model - do not accept a salesperson's summary of it.
