Hardscaping comparisons
The comparisons that matter in hardscaping are unit paving versus poured slabs, and block walls versus natural stone walls. Per Fixr's 2026 installed patio prices, concrete pavers run $10-$25 per square foot against $15-$30 for stamped concrete and $6-$17 for plain concrete. For retaining walls, concrete block runs $10-$50 per square foot of face against $20-$100 for natural stone. Pavers cost more than plain concrete but can be lifted and reset individually; a slab cannot.
Pavers vs stamped concrete. Stamped concrete is not the budget option - Fixr prices it at $15 to $30 per square foot installed, above concrete pavers at $10 to $25. Plain concrete at $6 to $17 is the cheap choice. The real difference is repairability: a cracked slab is patched or replaced, while an individual paver is lifted out and swapped. In freeze-thaw climates, that matters.
Concrete block vs natural stone walls. Block is cheaper ($10-$50 per square foot of face) and dimensionally consistent, which makes correct construction easier to verify. Natural stone ($20-$100) is more expensive and more labor-dependent. Both are only as good as the base and drainage behind them - Fixr's repair data shows walls fail from drainage, base deterioration and frost, not from the block being the wrong brand.
Gravel vs paved. Gravel is the cheapest patio surface at $6 to $14 per square foot installed, and Fixr notes it has the highest ongoing maintenance because it needs periodic refreshing. It's a reasonable choice for informal, low-traffic areas and a poor one where you want furniture to sit level.
Permeable vs standard pavers. Permeable systems solve runoff. EPA describes them as infiltrating rain and snowmelt and filtering some pollutants, and Fixr puts their service life at 35 to 100 years against 25 to 50 for standard paver driveways. They need a deeper reservoir base and open-graded joint stone, so they are not a like-for-like substitution.
One comparison that is not close: a good base under a cheap material beats a premium material over a bad base, every time. Spend the marginal dollar downward.
Choosing hardscaping between the options
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
- Compare repairability, not just price Ask yourself what happens in year eight when one area settles. Unit pavers give you a $7-$30 per square foot repair path; a slab gives you a patch or a replacement.
- Don't pick stamped concrete to save money At $15-$30 per square foot installed it is priced above concrete pavers. Choose it because you want a seamless look, not because you were told it's cheaper.
- Judge wall types on the base spec, not the block Ask both bidders the same questions about base depth, compaction and drainage. That's where the durability difference actually lives.
- Only choose permeable if you have a water problem It's a stormwater engineering answer with a longer service life, not a decorative upgrade. Without a runoff issue you're paying for a reservoir you don't need.
- Price the whole system, not the surface Excavation, base, edging, joint material and drainage are part of the comparison. Comparing only the top layer is how people end up surprised.
