NAR / NALP Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features (2023). The one report worth reading in full if you're weighing spend against resale. It pairs project cost estimates from landscape professionals with cost-recovery estimates from real estate agents, plus consumer "Joy Score" data. Headline figures: standard lawn care 217% cost recovery, landscape maintenance 104%, overall landscape upgrade 100%, outdoor kitchen 100%, new patio 95%, new wood deck 89%, tree care 87%, irrigation 83%, landscape lighting 59%, fire feature 56%, in-ground pool 56%.

Read the methodology before you quote the numbers. NAR states costs were collected from NALP members for a standardized 2,500-square-foot house on a 14,000-square-foot lot built after 1978 without hidden issues, with standard or typical quality materials and no top-of-the-line projects. It also notes actual cost and recovery depend on design, materials, location, and the age and condition of the home.

EPA. The Soak Up the Rain program covers permeable pavement, describing how it infiltrates rain and snowmelt into underlying soil and gravel, reduces runoff, filters some pollutants, and can reduce the need for some conventional drainage features. Useful background if you're considering permeable systems or dealing with a local stormwater requirement.

CMHA (Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association). The trade body for segmental pavement and segmental retaining walls. It runs installer certification for ICP, SRW, PICP and MSV, publishes a certified installer directory, maintains technical resources and a testing lab, and participates in standards development - including work with The Masonry Society on a gravity retaining wall standard and involvement with ASCE committees.

What is not well published: reliable national figures on hardscape failure rates, or a national rule on permits. Anyone quoting you those with confidence is extrapolating.
