Where it works. Distinguishing a person from a passing car, a swaying branch or a cat is a well-suited machine learning task, and it materially improves a camera's usefulness. Alert fatigue is the reason most camera owners eventually ignore their notifications, so reducing false alerts is not a gimmick. It is also relevant to alarm systems, given that the ASU Center for Problem-Oriented Policing attributes 94 to 98 percent of alarm activations to false causes — better discrimination at the sensor is where improvement has to come from.

Where it is overstated. "AI monitoring" is often a marketing layer over the same central station process, and behavior prediction claims should be treated with heavy skepticism unless the vendor can cite independent evaluation. Ask what the feature actually does in one sentence, whether it runs on the device or in the cloud, and whether it is included or subscription-gated. Most of the good features are gated.

Privacy is a real consideration, not a formality. Facial recognition and biometric processing are regulated in some US states, and rules differ. Cameras pointed at shared or neighboring property can also run into HOA covenants and local ordinances. Before enabling face recognition or mounting a camera covering someone else's door, check your state's law and your HOA rules.

Then ask the data questions the marketing skips: where is footage stored, for how long on your plan, who at the company can view it, is it encrypted, can it be shared with third parties or law enforcement without a warrant, and what happens to it if you cancel. A camera is a permanent recording device inside your home. Treat the account like a bank login — unique password, multi-factor authentication, and a periodic review of who has access.

How to choose

Buy person detection, ignore the rest

It is the feature with a clear benefit. Behavior prediction and 'AI monitoring' claims usually are not backed by anything you can check.

Ask whether processing is on-device or cloud

On-device processing keeps footage local. Cloud processing means your video leaves the house to be analyzed.

Check your state's biometric and recording laws

Facial recognition and audio recording are regulated differently by state. Check before enabling either.

Ask the retention and access questions

Where footage lives, how long, who can view it, and what happens if you cancel the subscription.

Secure the account like a bank login

Unique password, multi-factor authentication, and a twice-yearly review of who has app access.
