Two habits protect you from almost every bad outcome in this category. The ASU Center for Problem-Oriented Policing's review finds burglars "are less likely to gain entry when a house has two or more security devices," while also noting experienced offenders may proceed anyway and that alarms mainly slow entry and increase detection risk. The cheapest measures — locks, lighting, sightlines, looking occupied — do a lot of the work.

Finally, remember that the alarm industry's operational reality is false alarms: 94 to 98 percent of activations are false, most departments allow only three or four free ones a year, and some cities will not dispatch on an unverified signal at all. Ask your police department what applies where you live before you buy a monitoring plan built on the assumption that police come.
