Start with an ownership math exercise. Take the installed price, add five years of electricity and chemicals, and look at that number. Using the sourced ranges — $4,000–$8,500 to install, $20–$50 a month in power, $500–$1,000 a year in chemicals — five years of a mid-range tub is a materially larger commitment than the price tag suggests. People who do this exercise before buying are much happier with the purchase afterward.

Then be honest about frequency. A hot tub costs the same to run whether you use it four times a week or four times a year. If your realistic use is occasional, the running cost per soak becomes absurd, and the tub becomes a chore you pay for. This is the most common hot tub regret and it is entirely predictable in advance.

On size: buy for typical use, not maximum use. A 6-person tub is $4,800–$11,000 prefab versus $3,300–$8,000 for a 4-person, per Fixr, and the larger one costs more to heat and treat every day of its life for a party you host twice a year. Bigger tubs are also harder to place and deliver.

On type: unless permanence is specifically the point, a portable above-ground tub on a proper pad is the right default. It costs far less to buy and install than in-ground ($15,000–$20,000 plus roughly $5,800–$7,000 installation, per Fixr), runs cheaper, and can be moved or sold. Inflatables at $500–$3,000 are a legitimate way to test whether you will actually use one before committing.
