Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Most hot tub problems trace back to one of four things: dirty filters, unbalanced water, a failing cover, or a component that has reached the end of its life. Check the filter and the water chemistry before calling anyone — those two account for a large share of no-heat, weak-jet, and cloudy-water complaints, and both are free to rule out.
No heat or weak jets. Start with flow. A clogged filter or a low water level starves the pump, and many tubs will shut the heater down to protect themselves. Clean or replace the filter, top up the water, and see whether the problem clears before you pay for a call-out.
Tripping breaker. Stop using the tub and call a licensed electrician. A GFCI or breaker that trips repeatedly is detecting a fault, and a hot tub combines water with a high-current circuit. This is the one problem on this page you should never troubleshoot yourself or work around by resetting repeatedly.
Cloudy, foamy, or smelly water. Almost always chemistry or filtration: sanitizer out of range, pH or alkalinity drifted, a filter that needs cleaning, or water that is simply due for a change. Follow the dosing on your product labels and your owner's manual, and drain and refill on the schedule the manufacturer gives.
Rising electricity bill with no other symptom. Look at the cover first. A waterlogged cover is the most common quiet cause. This Old House puts normal above-ground operating cost at $25–$35 a month; a bill drifting well above your established baseline is a signal something has changed, usually the cover or a filter.
