Cost data is the most abused category in this industry. National averages compress enormous regional and scope variation, and many published figures come from lead-generation sites with an incentive to make the number look either alarming or reassuring. We link to the source for every figure so you can check it.

On standards: the SEER2 test procedure raised external static pressure from 0.1 to 0.5 inches of water, five times the prior level, which is why SEER2 numbers look lower than legacy SEER for equivalent equipment. National heat pump minimums are 14.3 SEER2 / 7.5 HSPF2 for split systems and 13.4 SEER2 / 6.7 HSPF2 for single-package units.

On incentives: the IRS states the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit applies to qualifying property placed in service before December 31, 2025. Any current-year claim about federal credits should be checked against the IRS page directly rather than a contractor's sales sheet.

How to choose

Check who published the number

Manufacturer, government agency, trade association, or a lead-generation site. All four have different incentives.

Prefer ranges to averages

A single national average tells you almost nothing about what your job will cost. A sourced range at least shows the spread.

Check the date on any cost figure

Equipment pricing has moved significantly with the efficiency and refrigerant changes. A 2022 number is not a 2026 number.

Government sources beat commentary for rules

IRS for tax credits, EPA for refrigerant and technician certification, your local building department for permits.
