Current published figures put whole-home insulation at roughly $2,000-$7,400 with a $4,700 average for 2,000 sq ft, blown-in at $1.65-$3.80 per sq ft installed, and combined air sealing and insulation savings at up to 10% of annual energy bills.

Two kinds of numbers get quoted in this industry and they have very different reliability. Performance recommendations - R-value by climate zone - come from published federal guidance tied to the 2021 IECC and are stable and specific: R30 in Zone 1 up to R60 in Zones 4-8 for an uninsulated attic, per ENERGY STAR. Cost figures come from aggregated contractor and homeowner-reported data on commercial cost sites. They are directionally useful and not precise.

Always check the date on a cost figure. Insulation material pricing moves with petrochemical and freight costs, and a number from three years ago can be well off. Where we cite a range on this site, we name the source and its update date so you can judge it yourself.

Savings claims are where the widest gap between marketing and evidence sits. ENERGY STAR's published figure for sealing air leaks and adding insulation together is up to 10% of annual energy bills. Anything much larger being quoted at your kitchen table is either an unusual starting condition or a sales number.

The most decision-relevant data is your own. Twelve months of utility bills, an attic depth measurement, and your climate zone tell you more about what you should spend than any national index. Use benchmarks to spot an outlier bid, then decide with your own numbers.

How to choose

Check the publication date on every cost figure
Material costs move. A 2022 number and a 2026 number are not interchangeable, and plenty of sites do not make the difference obvious.
Separate recommendations from estimates
R-value targets are published federal guidance. Prices are aggregated market data. Treat them with different levels of confidence.
Use ranges to spot outliers, not to negotiate
A bid outside the range is a question to ask, not proof of a ripoff. Sometimes it reflects a genuine access or condition problem.
Be skeptical of any savings figure above 10%
That is ENERGY STAR's stated ceiling for combined sealing and insulation on annual energy bills.
