The headline numbers all come from EPA WaterSense. Residential outdoor water use in the United States runs to nearly 8 billion gallons a day, mostly landscape irrigation. Roughly 50 percent of that irrigation water is wasted through overwatering and inefficiency, and homes with clock-timer systems use about 50 percent more water outdoors than homes without irrigation. Replacing a clock timer with a WaterSense labeled controller can save an average home up to 15,000 gallons a year.
The national scale-up is striking: EPA estimates that if every U.S. home with an automatic sprinkler system used a WaterSense labeled controller, the country could save 390 billion gallons of water and $4.5 billion in water costs annually - equivalent to the yearly household water needs of about 5 million American homes.
At household scale, the single most quotable figure is the broken head: up to 25,000 gallons and $280 wasted over a six-month irrigation season, per EPA WaterSense. That's the number to keep in mind when deciding whether a repair visit is worth booking.
On costs, aggregator data is a market picture rather than a quote. LatestCost puts per-zone installation at roughly $200 to $700 with an average near $350 and labor at $60 to $120 an hour; Homewyse's May 2026 calculator works out to about $1.04 to $1.91 per square foot of coverage; LawnStarter puts winterization at $59 to $144 and spring reactivation at $45 to $140.

- Prefer EPA figures to vendor claims WaterSense numbers are published, methodologically consistent and free of a sales motive.
- Use cost aggregates as ranges Per-zone and per-square-foot figures are for judging outlier bids, not for setting a budget to the dollar.
- Localize anything regulatory Restrictions, permits, testing frequency and rebates are set locally and change during a season.
- Measure your own system Your water bill and the can test are the most relevant data you'll ever have about your yard.
