Kitchen ideas
The most useful kitchen ideas are the ones with a price attached. A typical remodel runs about $27,000, with most between $15,000 and $45,000 and roughly $150 per square foot, per Fixr - and cabinetry alone is about 40% of that. Sorting ideas by what they cost, and by how expensive they are to reverse, is more useful than sorting them by style.
Ideas are cheap; the ones that go in your kitchen are not. Before you fall for a look, put every idea into one of two buckets. Reversible: paint, hardware, faucet, lighting, backsplash, stools. Change these in a weekend for a few hundred dollars. Permanent: layout, cabinet boxes, countertop material, appliance format. These are decade-scale.
The highest-impact ideas tend to be unglamorous. Better lighting - task lighting under the uppers plus something over the island - changes how a kitchen feels more than a new backsplash does. Pull-out shelves and drawer dividers change how it works. Both cost a fraction of a countertop upgrade.
The most expensive ideas are almost always layout ideas. Moving the sink, adding an island with plumbing, or removing a wall pushes you from Fixr's mid-range band (around $40,000) toward its high-end band (around $80,000 and up). That may be worth it. Just know that is what you are choosing when you move the sink six feet.
And if resale is anywhere in your thinking, remember what the data says: the modest version of this project is the one that returns. A minor mid-range remodel recouped about 113% of its cost in the 2025 Cost vs. Value report, while the major mid-range version recouped roughly 50%.
Choosing kitchen remodeling services
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
- Sort every idea by reversibility Reversible ideas can be adopted freely. Permanent ones should survive the question 'would I still want this if nobody else were doing it?'
- Fix the lighting before the finishes Task lighting under the upper cabinets is one of the cheapest changes with the largest daily effect. Most dated kitchens are actually under-lit kitchens.
- Buy storage, not decoration Pull-outs, dividers, and a proper trash pull-out are cheap during a cabinet order and make the kitchen work every day.
- Price the layout idea separately Ask for moving the sink or adding island plumbing as its own line item so you can see exactly what that idea costs before you commit to it.
- Collect photos, then find the common thread Twenty saved images usually share three or four features. Those are what you actually want - not the whole kitchen in any single photo.
