Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523There are two separate warranties on a paint job. The contractor's workmanship warranty covers their labor — peeling, blistering or adhesion failure caused by bad prep or application. The paint manufacturer's warranty is usually limited to the product itself, not the labor to reapply it. The workmanship warranty is the one that matters most, and its length and exclusions vary entirely by contractor.
Do not accept a warranty length as a quality signal on its own. A long warranty from a company with high staff turnover, or one written with broad exclusions, is worth less than a shorter one you can actually enforce. Read the exclusions before the number.
Common exclusions are reasonable and worth understanding: failures caused by moisture intrusion, structural movement, substrate rot, mildew, fading from UV, and surfaces the homeowner asked to be painted against the contractor's recommendation. Horizontal surfaces — decks, railings, sills — are often excluded or covered for a shorter period because they hold water.
For manufacturer warranties, ask for the actual written warranty document from the product's data sheet. Do not accept a verbal description of coverage from a salesperson. Coating warranties commonly cover the product only, require proof of purchase, and depend on the product having been applied per the manufacturer's instructions.
Ask one practical question: what does the claim process look like? Who do I call, how fast do you respond, and does the warranty transfer if I sell? A contractor with a clear answer has handled claims before.
