Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523A homeowner needs surprisingly few plumbing tools: a good plunger, a basin wrench, adjustable and pipe wrenches, channel locks, PTFE tape, a hand drain auger, and an inexpensive water pressure gauge. Rent or hire out anything past that. Power drain machines, torches, and pipe-threading equipment cause more expensive damage in inexperienced hands than the job would have cost to hire out.
The single most underrated homeowner tool is a water pressure gauge that screws onto a hose bib. It tells you in 30 seconds whether high static pressure is quietly wearing out every valve in the house — a diagnosis a plumber would otherwise charge you an hour to make.
For clogs, a flange plunger and a 25-foot hand auger handle most fixture blockages. Beyond that you're into main-line territory, and a rented power drain machine can punch through a pipe wall, wrap around a cast-iron joint, or shred a section of old clay. That's a rental that turns a routine service call into an excavation.
PEX has made some repairs genuinely DIY-friendly. Push-to-connect fittings and crimp tools let a careful homeowner make sound connections without soldering. That said, connections behind drywall or in inaccessible space are the wrong place to learn — practice on accessible runs first, and pressure test before you close anything up.
Do not solder in a wall cavity or near insulation unless you know what you're doing and have fire watch discipline. Torch work is how DIY plumbing turns into a house fire. If a repair requires sweating copper in a confined space, hire it out.
That is worth something only while you are still choosing. Tell us what is going on and we will match you with a few plumbing pros whose licence and insurance we have already checked — free, no obligation.
