Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Three checklists matter most for pool owners: a barrier audit against CPSC's recommendations, a monthly safety check of gates, latches and alarms, and a pre-contract checklist for hiring a builder. The barrier audit is the highest-value ten minutes you will spend, because CPSC identifies a gate that fails to close and latch as the weak link in even the best fence.
Barrier audit. Walk the perimeter with a tape measure. Barrier at least 48 inches above grade on the outside face. No more than 4 inches of clearance beneath (2 inches over grass or gravel, 1 inch for removable mesh). No opening that passes a 4-inch sphere. Vertical members no more than 1¾ inches apart where horizontals are under 45 inches apart. Nothing next to the fence a child could climb. Gate opens away from the pool, self-closes, self-latches, with the release at least 3 inches below the top on the pool side and no opening over ½ inch within 18 inches of it.
Monthly check. Open the gate fully and let go — does it close and latch every time, from every position? Test each door alarm. Check the cover mechanism and keep its controls out of children's reach. Confirm rescue equipment and a phone are at poolside, as CPSC recommends.
Pre-contract check. Three itemized bids on the same scope. License verified with the issuing agency. Proof of insurance. Payment tied to inspected milestones. Permit responsibility named in writing — Thursday Pools puts pool permits at $100–$1,000 or more, so it matters whether that is included. Barrier supply and installation named in writing. Written warranty documents in hand, read, before signing.
That is worth something only while you are still choosing. Tell us what is going on and we will match you with a few pools pros whose licence and insurance we have already checked — free, no obligation.
