A badge that only says “verified” is decoration - you cannot check it and it never expires. So here is the whole method: the six things we look at, the authority we look at them with, and the date we last looked.
Why screening matters
The scariest part of a roof is not the price - it is trusting a stranger on your home. We are not yet doing that checking for you: HomeMatchup does not currently verify licences, insurance or background history. What we do is send your job to a few local companies instead of selling your number on, and show you the checks to run before you sign.
The six checks to run yourself
- Licence - ask for the number and look it up on your state board's public register. Confirm the name matches and the class covers your job.
- Insurance - liability and workers' comp certificates sent to you by the insurance agency direct, not forwarded by the contractor.
- Written warranty - the length, and what voids it, in the contract rather than in conversation.
- Reviews about problems - find the ones describing something going wrong and read how the company answered.
- Complaint history - search the state board and your attorney general for the business name and the owner's name.
- Three itemised quotes - line items, not one number. A quote well below the others means a different scope.

Re-check before every job
A licence or a policy that was live last year can have lapsed since. Whoever introduced you, confirm both again before signing - it takes minutes and it is the single check that most often turns something up.
