Siding brands

Brand matters less than installation quality, but it does determine warranty terms, color and profile availability, and how easy replacement panels are to source years later. Compare brands by reading the actual warranty document for your product, not the marketing page, and by checking whether the installer is certified for that product.

Warranty language is where brands genuinely differ, and it is the part almost nobody reads. The questions worth answering before you buy: is coverage prorated after a number of years, is it transferable to the next owner and how many times, does it cover labor or only material, and what installation conditions void it. Every one of those answers is in the manufacturer's warranty PDF for your specific product line. Ask for it and read it.

Installer certification is real but limited. Some manufacturers run installer programs and some route warranty claims differently for certified installers. The Vinyl Siding Institute (now operating as Polymeric Exteriors) runs a product certification program accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 with Intertek as the certification body — that certifies products against a standard, not the crew on your house.

One practical point that outlives the warranty: profile and color availability. Siding that is discontinued in ten years cannot be matched for repairs. Widely distributed product lines from large manufacturers are easier to patch later, which is a real, if unglamorous, reason to prefer them.

How to choose

Get the warranty PDF before signing: For your exact product line. If the salesperson can't produce it, that's the answer.
Check five things in it: Proration schedule, transferability, whether labor is covered, exclusions (hail, wind speed, painting), and required registration deadlines.
Product certification vs installer certification: Product certification (e.g. the VSI/Polymeric Exteriors program, ISO/IEC 17065 accredited with Intertek) verifies the product against a standard. It says nothing about your installer.
Ask what the installer has actually hung: Fiber cement and engineered wood both have manufacturer-specific fastening and edge-sealing rules. A crew's first job with a product should not be your house.
Favor widely stocked lines: Discontinued profiles can't be matched. Availability in ten years is worth more than a marginal spec advantage today.
