Siding comparisons

Comparisons only mean something once the scope is identical. A vinyl quote with no tear-off against a fiber cement quote with full tear-off and flashing is not a material comparison — it is two different jobs. Normalize the scope first, then compare materials.

The second thing to normalize is time horizon. If you are selling in three years, the cheaper material almost always wins on the numbers. If this is your long-term house, run the maintenance cycle: cedar needs recoating repeatedly over the same period in which vinyl needs nothing and fiber cement needs occasional repainting. That recurring cost is usually what flips the comparison.

Finally, resale. Fixr puts vinyl siding replacement return on investment at around 97%. That is unusually high for a remodeling project, but resale ROI figures are national averages from a market snapshot — they are not a promise about your street.

How to choose

Vinyl vs fiber cement

Roughly $6 vs $9 per square foot installed. Choose fiber cement for fire zones, hail, and long ownership; choose vinyl for budget and no maintenance.

Fiber cement vs engineered wood

Both are listed at lifetime life expectancy by NAHB. Engineered wood is lighter and cheaper to install; fiber cement is non-combustible. Weight and local fire code often decide it.

Repair vs full replacement

Repair when damage is impact-based and confined. Replace when the cause is water intrusion — patching over wet sheathing just delays and enlarges the bill.

Re-side vs tear off

Going over existing siding saves the $1,000–$2,500 tear-off (per Fixr) but means nobody inspects your sheathing. Only sane on a wall known to be dry.

Compare on total installed price, not per-square-foot

Different contractors measure wall area differently. The bottom-line contract price for a defined scope is the only number that compares cleanly.
