Skylight comparisons
Fixed skylights are for daylight only: cheapest, simplest, fewest failure points, with material around $295-$537 in Fixr's figures. Venting skylights add ventilation and cost roughly double at $574-$1,044 for materials, plus potential electrical work at about $435-$793 for motorized versions. Tubular skylights, or solar tubes, are the cheapest option at roughly $229-$417 in materials and are the right answer for small interior spaces where cutting a full shaft isn't practical - but they deliver light, not a view.
Fixed versus venting comes down to whether you'll actually open it. A venting unit in a bathroom or kitchen earns its cost by moving moisture and heat out. A venting unit in a bedroom that nobody opens is money spent on a mechanism that will eventually need service. Motors, rain sensors and controls are the parts that fail first on any skylight.
Tubular versus traditional is not really a competition - they solve different problems. A tube brings surprising amounts of daylight into a windowless hallway, closet or interior bath, with far less construction disruption. A traditional skylight gives you sky, a sense of volume, and daylight quality a tube can't match. If you want a view, a tube will disappoint you no matter what the brochure says.
Cost isn't the only axis. Complexity matters: fewer moving parts and fewer penetrations mean fewer things to leak or break. On a roof you don't want to touch again for twenty years, the boring choice is often the smart one.
One honest comparison people skip: doing nothing to that room and instead adding a window or a solar-powered fan. If the problem is heat and stale air rather than darkness, ventilation may be the cheaper, lower-risk fix than any hole in the roof.
Choosing skylights between the options
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
- Buy venting only where moisture lives Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry. Elsewhere, the fixed unit is cheaper and has less to go wrong.
- Use tubes for small, windowless rooms Hallways, closets, interior bathrooms, stairwells. That's where they shine and where a full skylight would be overbuilt.
- Count the failure points Every motor, sensor, blind and control is a future service call. On a roof, simpler lasts longer.
- Don't buy a tube expecting a view It's a light pipe. If you want sky, you want glass.
- Compare against not cutting the roof at all If the real complaint is stuffiness, a fan or a wall window may solve it with none of the leak risk.
