After the job, maintenance and moving

Yes - updates patch security holes on internet-connected locks and cameras. Automate non-critical devices; delay major updates a few days on critical ones.
Varies widely. Set an annual reminder for locks and door sensors and respond to low-battery alerts. Always keep a physical key for smart locks.
Factory-reset devices staying behind, remove your accounts, take what you own, leave the buyer a device list. Do not hand over a house still tied to your logins.

Uncomfortable questions worth asking

Often. Ask what the feature does in one sentence, whether it runs on-device or in the cloud, and whether it is subscription-gated. Person detection can be useful; vague behavior prediction usually is not.
Read the privacy policy. Ask storage location, retention, employee access, third-party sharing and law-enforcement process. Prefer local storage where you can.
Matter-certified hardware is the strongest practical hedge. Proprietary-only ecosystems can polish today’s app and strand you later.
Almost never for routine consumer products. Be deliberate room by room; check state audio-recording rules; secure accounts like bank logins.

Which exact mesh nodes do I need for my floor plan?

A site survey of signal strength beats any ZIP-code guess. Walk the house with a phone Wi-Fi meter before buying access points.

Is facial recognition legal on my doorbell here?

Biometric and recording rules differ by state; HOAs may add limits. Check state law and covenants before enabling face features or covering neighbors.
