Smart home problems

Most smart home problems are network problems: weak Wi-Fi coverage, too many devices on one band, or a router that changed something after an update. The rest are cloud dependencies, dead batteries, and devices whose manufacturer discontinued support.

Devices going offline. Check coverage where the device actually is, not where you are standing. Many inexpensive smart devices only work on the 2.4 GHz band, and combined-band networks that steer them onto 5 GHz cause endless intermittent dropouts. Splitting or temporarily disabling band steering during setup fixes a lot of this.

Automations firing at the wrong time or not at all. Usually a cloud dependency and internet latency, or overlapping automations fighting each other. Move critical automations to local execution on a hub where the platform allows it.

Battery drain. Sensors reporting too frequently, cold locations, or a weak mesh forcing devices to retry transmissions. A better-placed hub or border router often doubles sensor battery life.

A device stops working for good. This is the failure mode unique to this category: a manufacturer shuts down the cloud service the product depends on, or discontinues the app, and the hardware becomes useless. There is no fix after the fact. The prevention is buying standards-based hardware with local control and treating cloud-only devices as consumables.

How to choose

Troubleshoot the network first
Check signal strength at the device location before replacing the device. Most "broken" devices are just out of range.
Watch the 2.4 versus 5 GHz issue
Many smart devices are 2.4 GHz only. Aggressive band steering on a mesh router is a common cause of setup failures.
Move critical automations local
Anything involving locks, heating or water shutoff should not depend on an internet connection.
Keep firmware current but not instantly
Updates fix bugs and security holes, but let a major firmware release sit a few days before applying it to a device you rely on.
Assume cloud-only devices are temporary
If the product cannot function without the vendor's servers, budget for it to stop working someday and do not build critical function on it.
Keep a manual override
Every smart lock, switch and thermostat should still be operable by hand. Do not install anything that fails closed.

Common causes are an app or firmware update changing behavior, a cloud service outage, an expired integration token, or a device that silently dropped off the network. Check the device's connectivity first, then the platform's status page.
