Buy vs rent. Do the arithmetic on your expected duration. At the middle of Fixr's rental range plus the fixed install and removal fees, a rental passes the price of a basic straight lift within a year or so. If the need is genuinely temporary - recovery from a hip replacement, a few months of rehab - renting avoids the removal and resale hassle. If the need is permanent or progressive, buying is almost always cheaper. Be honest about which one you are in, because rental companies benefit from optimism about recovery.

New vs refurbished. Refurbished straight lifts run $1,500-$2,500 per Fixr, and for a standard straight flight this can be a genuinely good buy from a dealer who installs and services it. Refurbished curved lifts are usually a poor buy: the rail was built for another staircase and reworking it often erases the saving. Ask what warranty comes with a refurbished unit, in writing.

Stair lift vs home elevator vs platform lift. A stair lift moves a seated person along the staircase. A platform or wheelchair lift moves a wheelchair and its occupant, at $5,000-$20,000 per Fixr. A residential elevator is a construction project, not an equipment purchase. If the user cannot transfer to and from a seat safely, a stair lift is the wrong product no matter how much cheaper it is.

Indoor vs outdoor. Outdoor lifts are weather-rated and cost $4,000-$12,000. Do not let anyone install an indoor-rated lift on exterior steps to save money. It is not a warranty technicality; it is a safety and reliability problem in rain and freezing weather.

How to choose

Let the staircase decide straight vs curved

One straight flight, no turns, no landing - straight rail. Anything else is a curved rail and a different budget. This is not negotiable by argument.

Rent only for a genuinely temporary need

Rental costs $150-$500 a month plus $800-$1,200 in install and removal fees and a $500-$1,000 deposit. Over a year that overtakes buying a straight lift.

Buy refurbished straight, not refurbished curved

A used curved rail was built for a different staircase. The engineering to adapt it typically eats the discount.

Match the product to the transfer ability

If the user cannot get safely into and out of a seat, you need a platform lift or elevator, not a cheaper stair lift.

Never use an indoor lift outdoors

Weather rating is a real specification. Outdoor models cost $4,000-$12,000 for a reason.
