Stair lift funding and financial help

Coverage for a stair lift is personal - it depends on your specific plan, your state, and your eligibility determination, and nobody on a website can tell you what yours covers. Contact the source directly: your plan administrator for Medicare or private insurance, your state Medicaid agency for waiver programs, and VA for veterans' housing grants. Get any answer in writing before you buy.

What we will not do. We will not tell you what Medicare, Medicaid, the VA or your insurer will pay toward your stair lift. Those determinations depend on your plan, your state, your clinical documentation and your eligibility, and getting it wrong costs real money to people who cannot spare it. What follows is who to ask.

Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Call the number on your card and ask for a coverage determination in writing for the specific item, using the model and any code your supplier provides. Medicare Advantage plans are administered privately and differ from one another, so a neighbor's experience tells you nothing about yours. Ask your prescribing clinician what documentation they can provide.

Medicaid. Medicaid is administered state by state, and home and community based services programs vary substantially between states in what they cover, who qualifies and how long the waiting list is. Contact your state Medicaid agency and ask specifically about home and community based services waivers and any environmental modification benefit. Your local Area Agency on Aging can usually tell you which program to call.

Veterans. VA administers housing grants for eligible veterans with certain service-connected disabilities. For fiscal year 2026, VA lists maximum grant amounts of $126,526 for the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant and $25,350 for the Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant, with Temporary Residence Adaptation amounts of up to $50,961 for SAH-eligible and $9,100 for SHA-eligible veterans. Those are program maximums, not what any individual receives - eligibility is determined by VA against specific disability criteria, and you apply using VA Form 26-4555. Talk to a VA representative or an accredited veterans service officer before buying anything.

Other routes worth asking about: your state's assistive technology program (many run device loan, reuse and low-interest financing schemes), local Area Agencies on Aging, and disease-specific charities. On contractor financing, ask for the total cash price in writing alongside any monthly payment - that is the only way to see what the financing costs.

How to choose

Get every coverage answer in writing
Verbal assurances from a salesperson about what your plan covers are worth nothing at claim time. Ask the payer directly and keep the response.
Never let a seller tell you what your benefit covers
A supplier saying "Medicare will cover this" is a sales claim, not a determination. Verify it with the plan yourself before signing.
Start with your Area Agency on Aging
They know the local programs, the waiting lists and which state office to call. It is free and it saves weeks.
Veterans: talk to VA before purchasing
Grant programs have eligibility criteria and application processes. Buying first can affect what a program will do. Apply with Form 26-4555 and ask a VA representative.
Compare financing against the cash price
Ask for the total cash price in writing next to the monthly figure. Dealer financing costs are frequently built into the job price.

That depends on your specific coverage, and only your plan can answer it. Call the number on your card, ask for a written coverage determination for the specific item, and involve your clinician for documentation. Do not rely on a supplier's claim about your coverage.
Medicaid is run state by state and home and community based services programs differ substantially in what they cover and who qualifies. Contact your state Medicaid agency directly and ask about HCBS waivers and environmental modification benefits. Your Area Agency on Aging can point you to the right office.
VA lists housing grant maximums for FY 2026 of $126,526 (SAH) and $25,350 (SHA), plus Temporary Residence Adaptation amounts of up to $50,961 and $9,100. These require VA eligibility determinations against specific service-connected disability criteria. Apply with VA Form 26-4555 and speak to a VA representative before buying.
Yes - state assistive technology programs (device reuse, loan and low-interest financing), Area Agencies on Aging, and disease-specific charities. These are local and change, so call rather than relying on a list.
Medical expense deductibility depends on your circumstances and current tax rules. Ask a tax professional and check IRS guidance rather than taking a salesperson's word for it. Keep the invoice and any clinician's letter recommending the equipment.
