Stair access problems

After a fall. A fall on the stairs is a medical event as well as an access problem. Before buying equipment, get the cause assessed - medication side effects, blood pressure on standing, vision, foot problems and muscle weakness are all common and treatable causes. Buying a lift and skipping the assessment fixes the staircase and leaves the underlying risk in the rest of the house.

Caregiver strain. If a family member is supporting or partly carrying someone up the stairs, that is a two-person injury waiting to happen and one of the strongest reasons to install a lift quickly. It is also the situation where families make the fastest, most expensive purchase. Get more than one quote even here - $2,000-$8,000 for a straight lift versus $8,000-$20,000 for curved is too big a gap to skip comparison shopping.

Second floor unreachable. Consider the alternative honestly: moving the bedroom downstairs. If there is a downstairs room and any kind of downstairs bathroom, that can be cheaper, faster and safer than a lift. A good assessor will raise this option. A salesperson usually will not.

Narrow staircases. Fit concerns are usually solvable - folded seats and footrests are slimmer than people expect - but this needs measuring. Ask for the folded width of the specific model and the remaining clear stair width in inches. Also check that a second person can still pass on the stairs in an emergency.

How to choose

Get the fall investigated medically first

A stair lift addresses one location. Medication review, blood pressure checks and a strength and balance assessment address the person.

Test the transfer, not the ride

Riding a lift is easy. Getting on at the bottom and off at the top is where the risk sits. Have the user try both during a demonstration.

Consider moving the bedroom downstairs

It is free. If it works, it is often better than any equipment. Rule it out deliberately rather than by omission.

Check that others can still use the stairs

Measure remaining clear width with the lift folded. In an emergency, someone else has to get up and down past it.

Do not let caregiver exhaustion rush the purchase

It is a legitimate emergency, but it is also the situation salespeople price into. Get two quotes even when you need it this week.
