Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523AI is genuinely useful for identifying a species from a photo and for helping you describe a symptom clearly before you call. It cannot assess structural risk. Decay, root plate condition and internal defects are invisible in a photo, and a confident AI answer about whether your tree will fall is generated, not observed. Never use it to decide against a professional assessment.
Where it helps. Species identification from leaf and bark photos is a well-suited task, and knowing what you have changes the cost conversation and the pruning calendar. AI is also good at turning "the tree looks bad" into "upper crown has roughly 30 percent dead branches, leaves smaller than last year, and there are shelf fungi at the base on the north side" — precision that shortens an arborist's diagnosis.
It is also a decent quote reviewer. Paste a written scope and ask what is missing: stump depth, grindings removal, hole fill, lawn repair, permit responsibility, insurance confirmation. Those gaps are where tree quotes hide money, and a checklist pass catches them.
Where it fails, and where the failure is dangerous. Structural risk assessment requires physical inspection — sounding the trunk, examining the root plate, sometimes resistance drilling or tomography. Internal decay is by definition not visible in a photograph. ISA maintains a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification precisely because this is a trained physical evaluation, not a visual judgment call.
It also fails on local rules. Permit thresholds, protected species, heritage tree ordinances, HOA covenants, disease pruning windows and utility responsibility boundaries are all local and change. Any AI answer about your specific jurisdiction should be treated as a prompt to make a phone call, not as an answer.
