Angi's 2026 data reports higher project averages, which reflects that many quotes bundle broader bathroom work. Read what each figure includes before comparing them.

Water. Most walk-in tubs hold 40 to 80 gallons, averaging around 50, versus far less for a standard tub. Filling takes commonly 10 to 15 minutes. Both figures matter for water heater sizing and for your utility bill, and both are routinely underdiscussed at the sales appointment.

Fall risk. The CDC reports more than one in four adults 65 and older falls annually, with about 3 million fall-related emergency department visits and roughly 1 million fall-related hospitalizations each year among older adults. Bathrooms are consistently among the most common in-home fall locations.

What the data does not show is that a walk-in tub specifically reduces an individual's fall risk by a given percentage. We have not found credible research establishing that, and you should be skeptical of any company that quotes one.

Check what a cost figure includes

Tub-only, tub-plus-labor and full-bathroom-remodel numbers get quoted interchangeably. That is why published averages diverge so much.

Treat fall-reduction percentages as unproven

Fall risk data is well documented. Product-specific fall reduction claims generally are not. Ask for the study.

Factor water cost into ownership

A 40 to 80 gallon fill per bath is a real ongoing utility difference from a shower.
