Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523A walk-in tub is the right choice when someone can walk and pivot but cannot safely step over a standard tub wall, and specifically wants to bathe seated. It is the wrong choice for most wheelchair users, for anyone who cannot tolerate sitting through a 10 to 15 minute fill and drain, or when the real goal is simply fall prevention — grab bars, a shower bench and a handheld sprayer address that for a fraction of the cost.
Falls in the bathroom are a genuine risk. CDC data shows more than one in four adults aged 65 and older falls each year, with roughly 3 million older-adult fall-related emergency department visits annually. That risk is real. It does not automatically mean the answer is a five-figure tub.
Work through it in order. First, what is the specific hazard — stepping over the tub wall, standing while washing, getting up from a seated position, or slipping on wet tile? Second, what is the cheapest intervention that removes that hazard? Grab bars properly anchored into framing, a shower chair, a handheld sprayer and better lighting solve a lot of it.
If the answer really is that the person wants and can use a seated bath and can step over a low threshold, then a walk-in tub makes sense. Get a professional assessment. An occupational therapist evaluates the person and the room rather than selling a product; ask a physician about a referral.
This category attracts aggressive selling to older homeowners. Do not sign at the first appointment. Have an adult family member or trusted friend present. Ask for the written contract and read it away from the salesperson.
