Walk-in tub guides

Step 1 — assess the person. Can they step over a low threshold? Can they rise from a seated position unaided? Is a caregiver assisting? These determine seat height, door type and whether a tub is the right product at all.

Step 2 — measure. Record the alcove length, width and depth, the drain position, the bathroom door width, and the clear floor space in front of the tub. An outward-swinging door needs that clear space; an inward-swinging door narrows the entry opening.

Step 3 — check the utilities. Get the model's fill volume. Most walk-in tubs hold 40 to 80 gallons, averaging around 50, and a 40-gallon water heater is usually not enough — 50 to 80 gallons of capacity, or a mixing valve, is the common recommendation. If the tub has jets, a blower, a heated seat or a powered drain, confirm the electrical work is in the quote.

Steps 4 and 5 — quote and inspect. Three written all-in quotes on identical scope. At handover, confirm the tub is level, the door closes and seals with no leak through a full fill, the drain empties in the time the company claimed, and every control works. Hold final payment until the punch list is clear.

How to choose

Get the fill volume in writing

It drives water heater sizing, fill time and your water bill. Manufacturers publish it; make the salesperson produce it.

Choose door swing by bathroom, not brochure

Inward doors suit tight rooms but reduce entry width and cannot open when full. Outward doors give a wider entry but need clear floor space.

Ask about seat height and grab bar placement

Seat height determines how hard it is to stand back up. Confirm integrated grab bars are positioned for the actual user, not generically.

Require a full-fill leak test at handover

Fill the tub completely with the installer present and check the door seal. Discovering a leak after they leave is a much worse position.

Time the drain at handover

Slow drainage on a gravity line is a common complaint. Time it once with the installer there and compare against what you were told.
