Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Brand matters far less than the certified model and how you buy it. Compare brands on three things you can verify: which NSF/ANSI standard and claim the specific model carries, whether replacement consumables are standard or proprietary, and the total installed cash price. Dealer-sold brands typically quote higher than the $1,200–$3,800 installed range HomeGuide reports for salt-based softeners, because the price includes the in-home sales visit.
We do not publish brand warranty terms, because warranty language changes by model, by dealer and by year, and getting it wrong could cost you a claim. Ask for the warranty document itself before purchase, and read who honors it — manufacturer or local dealer — and what voids it. If service by a non-dealer technician voids coverage, that is a cost you're accepting.
The verifiable comparison is certification. Look up the exact model number in a third-party listing rather than trusting a brochure. WQA's Gold Seal is the oldest third-party testing and certification program in the water treatment industry and certifies to NSF/ANSI and NSF/ANSI/CAN standards across softeners, filtration, RO and UV; NSF publishes its own listings too. A brand with certified models and a brand with certified marketing look identical until you check.
Sales channel is the other real difference. Some brands sell mainly through local dealers with in-home appointments; others sell direct or through retail. Neither model is inherently dishonest, but the dealer channel carries the cost of the visit, and that shows up in the price. If a quote is far above published installed ranges, ask specifically what the extra buys — a longer warranty and local service is a legitimate answer, "proprietary media" usually isn't.
Whatever brand you're considering, price the same certified specification through a local licensed plumber as a control. If the branded quote is triple the plumber's number for equivalent certified performance, you now know exactly what you're paying for and can decide whether you want it.
That is worth something only while you are still choosing. Tell us what is going on and we will match you with a few water treatment pros whose licence and insurance we have already checked — free, no obligation.
