Water treatment comparisons
A softener removes hardness minerals by ion exchange and is covered by NSF/ANSI 44; a carbon filter improves taste, odor and chlorine under NSF/ANSI 42; reverse osmosis reduces total dissolved solids and many chemical contaminants under NSF/ANSI 58. They solve different problems and are frequently installed together. On price, whole-house RO is the most expensive option at $4,800-$8,000 installed while an under-sink point-of-use system covers drinking water for $170-$580.
Softener vs filtration. Not a choice, usually a sequence. Softening addresses scale; filtration addresses what you taste and smell. If your test shows both hardness and chlorine, the honest recommendation is both, and HomeGuide prices a combined carbon, mineral, sediment, UV and softener whole-house setup at $2,650-$5,400.
Salt-based vs salt-free. This is where marketing gets loosest. Salt-based ion exchange actually removes calcium and magnesium and is the technology NSF/ANSI 44 covers. "Salt-free conditioners" do not remove hardness minerals - they aim to change how the minerals behave so they scale less. HomeGuide prices salt-free units at $1,500-$4,500 installed, often more than a salt-based system at $1,200-$3,800. If a salt-free product is pitched as an equivalent softener, ask for the certified standard and claim. If there isn't one, walk.
Whole-house vs point-of-use. Whole-house protects plumbing, water heaters and appliances. Point-of-use protects the glass you drink from, much cheaper. If your only complaint is drinking water taste, a $170-$580 under-sink unit is the proportionate answer and a $5,000 whole-house package is not.
Reverse osmosis vs carbon. Carbon is fast, cheap and aesthetic-focused. RO is slower, produces some reject water, and reaches contaminants carbon cannot - NSF/ANSI 58 covers TDS and chemical reduction. Under-sink RO runs $300-$950 versus $180-$550 for a carbon-only under-sink unit. Rent vs buy: Fixr lists rental at $25-$50 per month; over ten years that is more than most purchases, so rent only as a short-term bridge.
Choosing water treatment between the options
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
- Decide from the test result, not the brochure Hardness number drives softener sizing. Contaminant results drive whether you need NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 performance. Taste complaints drive NSF/ANSI 42.
- Ask salt-free vendors for the standard There is a certified standard for cation exchange softeners (NSF/ANSI 44). If a conditioner claims softener-equivalent performance without a certified claim, treat the claim as unproven.
- Compare the same specification across bids Grain capacity, valve type, media, certified claims. Two quotes with different grain ratings are not comparable, and Fixr's capacity pricing shows the spread is real.
- Don't buy whole-house to solve a one-tap problem Scope creep from "the kitchen water tastes bad" to a five-figure whole-home system is the most common way people overspend here.
- Count the reject water and the pressure hit RO systems produce reject water and run slower than a carbon filter. That's a real tradeoff to weigh, not a defect.
