Water problems

Most household water complaints are aesthetic — hardness scale, chlorine taste, cloudiness, staining or a rotten-egg smell — and each points to a different treatment. Symptoms alone are not a diagnosis: the only way to know what is in your water is a lab test, either your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report (required by EPA to be delivered by July 1 each year) or a state-certified lab test if you are on a private well.

Scale, spotting and soap that won't lather point to hardness. USGS classifies water at 121–180 mg/L as calcium carbonate as hard and above 180 mg/L as very hard. Hardness is the one problem a softener is specifically designed for, and NSF/ANSI 44 is the standard covering residential cation exchange softeners.

A chlorine or swimming-pool taste is typically a disinfectant residual from a municipal system. That is an aesthetic issue, and NSF/ANSI 42 is the standard that covers chlorine, taste, odor and particulate reduction. A carbon filter — whole-house or a single under-sink unit at $170–$580 installed — is the usual answer, not a softener.

Rusty, orange or black staining and a metallic taste generally point toward iron or manganese. NSF/ANSI 42 also covers iron and manganese reduction claims. A rotten-egg smell is commonly associated with hydrogen sulfide, and is far more common on private wells. Cloudy water is often just entrained air that clears from the bottom of the glass up; if it doesn't clear, it points to sediment or turbidity.

Two things deserve a straight warning. First, we cannot tell you what is in your water, and neither can anyone who has not tested it. Second, a sudden change — new taste, new color, new smell — is a reason to test now, not to buy equipment now. The EPA specifically advises private well owners to test immediately when water quality or ground conditions change. If a well test shows total coliform bacteria, that is a call to your local health department, not a shopping trip.

How to choose

Write down the symptom precisely before you call anyone
Hot water only, or cold too? All fixtures or one? Constant or intermittent? Hot-water-only sulfur smell often points at the water heater's anode rod rather than the supply.
Test before you treat
EPA recommends annual private-well testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH, through a state-certified lab. Your health department may do it free.
Match the standard to the symptom
Taste and odor is NSF/ANSI 42. Health-related contaminant reduction is NSF/ANSI 53. Dissolved solids is NSF/ANSI 58 reverse osmosis. Microorganisms is NSF/ANSI 55 UV. Ask for the certified claim.
Treat bacteria as urgent, not as an upsell
A positive coliform result on a well needs your local health department involved. Do not let it become a same-day sales conversation about a whole-house package.
Fix the pressure problem, don't route around it
Low pressure after a filter is usually a clogged cartridge or an undersized unit. Adding a booster pump on top of a clogged filter is treating a symptom.

That smell is commonly associated with hydrogen sulfide and is most often reported on private wells. If it only happens on the hot side, suspect the water heater. Either way, test through a state-certified lab before buying treatment equipment.
Hardness is a mineral content measure, not a regulated health contaminant — USGS classifies it purely by concentration of calcium carbonate. Its costs are practical: scale, spotting, more soap. Anyone selling you a softener on health grounds is overselling.
If you're on a public system, read your utility's Consumer Confidence Report, which EPA requires to be delivered annually by July 1 and which is searchable through EPA's CCR tool. If you're on a well, hire a state-certified lab.
Not necessarily — cloudiness that clears from the bottom of the glass upward is usually dissolved air. Cloudiness that persists suggests sediment or turbidity and is worth testing. Nobody can tell you it's safe or unsafe without a test.
