How long does a wheelchair ramp need to be?

Will insurance or Medicare pay for a ramp?

We cannot tell you your coverage. Medicare’s DME benefit covers durable medical equipment used in the home; home modifications are generally outside that list - confirm with Medicare. Check state Medicaid HCBS waivers and VA housing grants (FY 2026 maximums $126,526 SAH / $25,350 SHA) directly with those agencies.

The Access Board is clear: the ADA does not apply to private single-family homes. Reputable builders still use ADA geometry because it works. Your local building code may impose different rules - call them.

Rise determines length; length determines price. At $100-$250 per installed foot there is no way around that arithmetic. If the site cannot hold a safe run, discuss another entrance, a switchback or a lift - not a 1:6 death trap.

The work itself

1:12 running slope maximum under §405.2 - one inch of rise per twelve inches of run - with maximum cross slope 1:48 under §405.3. Treat 1:12 as a ceiling, not a target; gentler is easier.
36 inches minimum clear width under §405.5, measured between handrails where handrails are provided - not deck width alone.
Level landings at top and bottom of runs (§405.7); where direction changes, at least 60 inches clear by 60 inches clear. That footprint is what switchbacks consume.
Handrails on both sides when rise exceeds 6 inches (§405.8). Edge protection along runs and landings (§405.9) via curb, rail blocking a 4-inch sphere, or surface extending 12 inches beyond the handrail face.
Generally no. The Access Board states the ADA does not apply to individually owned or leased private housing. It covers public accommodations, commercial and government facilities. Local residential codes may still apply.
Usually only by lengthening or adding a switchback with a 60-by-60 landing. Concrete often means rebuild; modular aluminum may accept added sections - a strong argument for modular at $1,500-$4,000.

Problems and safety

Excess cross slope. Cap is 1:48. A ramp that looks flat can still drag a chair sideways - check with a level, not by eye.
Ice is a reason to plan surfacing, drainage and maintenance, not automatically reject wood. Non-slip treatments ($5-$20 per foot class) and winter care matter on every material.
Do not steepen past safe geometry to “make it fit.” Consider another door with less rise, a switchback, or a lift. Site constraints need honest options, not a short ramp.
Portable and threshold ramps have length and capacity limits. If rise needs more run than the product provides, you need a longer modular or permanent solution - not a steeper short board.
No on a compliant-style build. Edge protection stops casters dropping off. §405.9 is a safety element, not trim.

After the job, maintenance and funding follow-through

Slope, cross slope, clear width between handrails, landing sizes, handrail presence/height continuity, edge protection and surface grip. Tape measure and level - about fifteen minutes.
Reseal or restain as finish wears, keep fasteners tight, clear debris and ice, and watch for rot at ground contact. Budget Angi-type maintenance of $50-$300 a year.
Usually yes - a major advantage when the need is temporary or the house will be sold. Ask about resale or take-back when you buy.
Invoices, drawings, photos, clinician letters and any prior authorization. Agencies want documentation; contractors’ verbal optimism is not a claim file.

Uncomfortable questions worth asking

Ignore that as coverage. Only Medicare, Medicaid or VA can determine benefits. Sign nothing based on a seller’s assurance - the gap between hope and denial is the full invoice.
Demand the rise, the run and the slope ratio in writing. If slope is steeper than 1:12 without a documented user-specific reason and your acceptance, walk away.
Treat pressure pricing as a tactic. Safe geometry and three bids matter more than saving a few hundred under stress.
As a legal claim, usually no - ADA does not govern private single-family homes. As a geometry claim, ask them to cite slope, width, landings, handrails and edge protection in numbers, not slogans.
Depends on your contract. Never pay large deposits until benefits are confirmed in writing if financing depends on them. Read cancellation clauses first.

Local only - call your city or county building department. Where permits are required, reported costs often run $50-$300. We cannot recite your jurisdiction’s threshold.

Will my Medicare plan cover this ramp?

Only Medicare (or your plan) can say. DME rules cover equipment used in the home; home modifications are generally different. Call Medicare with the exact item description.

Will Medicaid in my state pay?

State-administered HCBS waivers differ widely. Contact your state Medicaid agency and Area Agency on Aging. Waiting lists and covered services are local.

Am I eligible for VA SAH or SHA grants?

Only VA decides against service-connected criteria. FY 2026 program maximums are $126,526 (SAH) and $25,350 (SHA), plus Temporary Residence Adaptation caps - not automatic awards. Apply with Form 26-4555 before purchasing when possible.
