Window comparisons

Repair vs replace. Replace when the frame or sill is rotted, when the window no longer operates safely, or when you are changing the opening. Repair when the frame is sound and the complaint is fog, a broken balance, worn weatherstripping, or a cracked pane.

Insert vs full-frame. Insert is cheaper and less disruptive but shrinks the visible glass slightly and keeps whatever is behind your trim. Full-frame lets the installer inspect and re-flash the opening, which is the part that actually keeps water out.

Double vs triple pane. Triple glazing lowers U-factor and helps with noise, at meaningfully higher cost and weight. Ask for both quotes with their NFRC U-factors attached, then judge whether the difference is worth it in your climate.

Brand vs installer. If you have to choose, choose the installer. Perimeter air and water sealing is field work. A top-tier window installed badly leaks; a mid-tier window installed well does not.

Price the repair option before ruling it out

Get an actual number for glass or sash replacement. Companies that only sell whole windows will not offer it unasked.

Ask what happens behind the trim

On an insert job, the original frame and any hidden gaps stay. If you suspect air leakage there, ask whether they will remove trim and air-seal the perimeter.

Compare NFRC numbers, not adjectives

Two quotes both saying "energy efficient low-E glass" can differ by a lot. Put the U-factor and SHGC of each proposed unit side by side.

Decide on style change early

Switching from double-hung to casement, or adding a picture window, changes the price bracket sharply — bay units alone run $900 to $7,100 before labor per NerdWallet.

Weigh disruption

Full-frame work means interior trim, paint, and often siding repair. Budget for the finish work, not just the window.
