Window research and data
The defensible 2026 numbers for window replacement are: roughly $300 to $2,500 per window installed, about $18,000 to $20,000 for a 25-window whole-house project (NerdWallet), and vinyl window replacement recouping roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of its cost at resale per Zonda's 2025 Cost vs. Value Report. Energy-savings claims vary widely by baseline and climate and should be treated with more caution than cost figures.
Cost. NerdWallet's 2026 guide puts individual replacement windows at $300-$2,500 each and a roughly 25-window house at $18,000-$20,000. Homewyse's 2026 calculator lands a typical installed replacement window near $632-$967. Angi's 2026 data shows a similar mid-range. Different methodologies, overlapping answers.
Resale. Zonda's 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, as reported by Opendoor, shows vinyl window replacement adding roughly $14,270 in resale value on about a $21,000 project - a return in the high-60s to low-70s percent. Treat any claim above that with suspicion.
Energy. Savings depend entirely on what you are replacing and where you live. Replacing single-pane glass in a cold climate is a different proposition from swapping 15-year-old double-pane units in a mild one. NerdWallet cites roughly a 13% household energy bill reduction for moving from single-pane to ENERGY STAR certified windows; that figure does not transfer to a double-pane baseline.
When you see a big percentage in a sales presentation, ask what the baseline was, what climate zone, and where the number came from. Most cannot answer.
Choosing windows what the data says
The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.
- Check the baseline on every energy claim Single-pane to ENERGY STAR is the most favorable comparison possible. If your current windows are double-pane, that number does not apply to you.
- Use cost recouped, not 'adds value' Cost vs. Value reports measure the share of spend recovered, and it is well under 100% for windows.
- Prefer ranges from multiple sources When NerdWallet, Angi and Homewyse overlap, the overlap is your realistic band. Where they diverge, your local market decides.
- Regional cost variation is real Labor rates, permit requirements and climate-driven glazing requirements - such as impact-rated glass in coastal areas - move the number materially.
- Ask for the source of any statistic A number in a brochure with no citation is marketing. This applies to us too - every figure above is linked.
