Retrofitting one into an existing shower is the mistake this category is built on.
A steam shower is a fully enclosed shower fitted with a steam generator, a sealed door and a vapour-tight envelope. The generator itself is the simple part — it sits remotely, feeds a steam head, and is controlled from inside. The difficult and expensive part is the enclosure: steam is a vapour under slight pressure that will find any unsealed path into the wall or ceiling assembly, so the waterproofing, the ceiling and the door are all specified differently from an ordinary shower.

Establish whether the enclosure can be made vapour-tight at all
A steam room needs a sealed envelope from the floor to the ceiling, with the ceiling inside the enclosure. An open walk-in shower with a partial screen and an open top cannot hold steam and cannot be converted into something that does without rebuilding it.
Watch for: A generator quoted for an existing open shower. It will produce steam and the steam will leave, into the bathroom and into the ceiling void, and you will have paid for a machine that heats the room above.
Specify the vapour barrier and the waterproofing as one assembly
Steam migrates through materials that stop liquid water. The enclosure needs a continuous vapour-rated system across walls, floor and ceiling, detailed at every junction and penetration, and installed to the manufacturer's method for steam rather than for a shower.
Watch for: Standard shower waterproofing being proposed. Ask directly whether the system is rated for steam use, and get the answer in writing — this is the item that decides whether moisture ends up in your framing.
Slope the ceiling
A flat ceiling inside a steam enclosure collects condensate and drips it straight down on whoever is under it. A sloped ceiling runs the condensate to a wall so it drains. This is the detail that most obviously separates a steam room built by someone who has done it from one that has not.
Watch for: A flat tiled ceiling in a steam shower. It is not a defect that fails structurally — it is a defect you experience every single time you use it, and correcting it afterwards means rebuilding the ceiling.
Size and site the generator
Generator capacity is matched to the enclosure volume, and adjusted for the surface materials — stone and large tile absorb and hold more heat than acrylic, so an identically sized room clad in stone needs more capacity. The unit sits remotely, within a manufacturer-specified distance of the steam head, somewhere accessible for servicing.
Watch for: A generator sized from floor area alone with no account of the ceiling height or the cladding. Undersized, it never reaches temperature and the room is a disappointment you cannot fix without replacing the unit.
Run the electrical and the plumbing to it
Steam generators need their own supply, sized and protected as the electrical code adopted locally requires, and confirmed by a licensed electrician. They also need a water feed and a drain line for the automatic flush cycle that keeps scale from destroying the unit.
Watch for: No drain provision for the generator. The flush cycle is what makes the unit last in hard water, and installations that skip the drain line quietly delete the maintenance feature you paid for.
Fit a sealing door and specify the controls
A steam enclosure needs a door that seals on all four edges with a proper gasket and a transom or vent that can be opened afterwards to let the room dry. An ordinary shower door with a gap at the top and bottom does not contain steam.
Watch for: A standard frameless shower door specified for a steam enclosure. It is the most common substitution, it is cheaper, and it means the room never reaches temperature.
Ventilate for afterwards, not just during
When the session ends the enclosure is saturated, and it has to dry. That means an exhaust arrangement that runs on after use, a door or transom that can be left open, and — in practice — surfaces chosen with the knowledge that they will be wet more often than a shower is.
Watch for: A steam enclosure with no plan for drying it out. It is the reason steam showers develop mould problems faster than ordinary showers, and it is entirely a design decision rather than a maintenance failing.
Commission it and keep the documents
Run a full cycle, confirm the room reaches temperature in a reasonable time, check the door seals, confirm the flush cycle works and that the generator is genuinely accessible for servicing. Keep the manual, the warranty and the electrical sign-off.
Watch for: A generator installed behind a panel that has to be cut open to service it. These units need periodic attention, and access designed in on day one costs nothing.

A flat ceiling drips condensate on you every session, and correcting it later means rebuilding it. If they have not raised this themselves, ask why not.
How are you sizing the generator, and does it account for the cladding?
Enclosure volume and surface material both matter, because stone and large tile hold heat. Sized from floor area alone, the room may never reach temperature.
Where will the generator sit, and how do I get at it to service it?
These units need periodic attention and a flush cycle to survive hard water. Accessible siting is free on day one and expensive afterwards.
Has a licensed electrician confirmed the supply and the panel capacity?
The requirement is set by the electrical code as adopted locally and confirmed at inspection. It should be established before the enclosure is designed, not after the walls close.
Is there a drain line for the generator's flush cycle?
The feature that keeps scale from killing the unit. Installations that skip the drain provision quietly remove the maintenance system you are paying for.
How does the enclosure dry out after a session?
A saturated sealed room that cannot dry grows mould faster than any ordinary shower. It is a design answer — a vent, a transom, run-on extraction — not a cleaning routine.
