When fence staining is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

Several posts rock or probe soft at grade. Repair or replace first. Stain will not re-lignify a post.
You need the fence to look perfect for a sale next month and the structure is unevenly failed. Buyers notice lean more than grey. Budget may belong in posts, not pigment.
Boards are paper-thin or delaminating. Coating does not restore section loss. Replace boards or the run.
The fence is the wrong height or in violation and will be forced down. Do not coat a condemned line.

Should I stain my fence or replace it?

Stain when the structure is sound and the surface is merely weathered. Replace when posts fail at grade across the run or when matching and height goals make patchwork foolish. Can I stain a leaning fence?

You can, and it will be a nicely coloured leaning fence. Fix the lean — usually posts — first. Coating does not straighten structure.

Who should I hire — a fence company or a painter?

How do I know boards are too far gone to stain?

If a screwdriver sinks easily into the face or bottom, if boards crumble at the soil line, or if they flex under light hand pressure with soft fibers showing, they are candidates for replacement, not pigment. Grey colour alone is not failure.

Is staining worth it before selling?

When the fence is straight and complete, a fresh coat helps photos and first impressions. When the fence leans, buyers discount harder than grey wood does. Spend where the objection is structural if you have to choose.

What about the neighbour's side?

Access and ownership rules vary. Do not coat what you do not own without agreement. A one-sided stain on a boundary fence can look unfinished from the street if both faces show — plan the politics with the same care as the product.

How long after installation should a new wood fence be stained?

When moisture content allows the product to bond — often after mill-wet or treated lumber has had time to dry, not always on install day. Coordinate with whoever coats. Painting's page covers product readiness; your fence crew should not force a wet-board coat for photo day.

Can I stain only the street face of the fence?

Yes if you own that face and accept the look from other angles. Weathering will differ face to face. Boundary politics still apply on the far side. One-face coating is a common budget choice with known aesthetic trade-offs.

Does staining stop wood-destroying insects?

Do not count on decorative stain as pest control. Moisture management and sound detailing matter more. If insects are active in posts, that is a repair and possibly pest conversation, not a pigment conversation.

Should I clean the fence myself before a pro stains?

Ask the coater — some want to control wash chemistry and dryness. DIY pressure washing can damage wood before they arrive. From the fencing side, do complete mechanical fastening and post decisions first so cleaners are not washing a structure that will be torn apart next week.

What if only the sunny side is grey?

Selective staining is possible but colour mismatch between faces or sections can look patchy. Sometimes staining the whole visible composition is smarter than a single hot face. Structure still must be sound on every section you coat.
