Hardscaping cost

Hardscaping is priced per square foot for flatwork and per square foot of wall face for retaining walls. Per Fixr's 2026 data, patios run $6 to $30 per square foot installed with $10 to $20 most common, retaining walls run $10 to $75 per square foot with $15 to $45 typical, paver driveways run about $8 to $25 per square foot with labor, fire pit installation averages $850 nationally within a $300 to $1,400 range, and outdoor kitchens average $16,000 within a $6,000 to $30,000 range.

Material choice sets the floor and labor sets the ceiling. Fixr's installed patio prices run roughly: gravel $6–$14, concrete $6–$17, concrete pavers $10–$25, brick $12–$20, stone $15–$30, stamped concrete $15–$30, slate $15–$30, flagstone $16–$30 and bluestone $18–$30 per square foot. Labor is about $5 to $10 per square foot for the simpler materials and up to about $25 per square foot for the ones that have to be cut and fitted individually.

Retaining walls are quoted per square foot of wall face, not per foot of length, which catches people out. A 30-foot wall that is 4 feet tall is 120 square feet of face. Fixr's material ranges are roughly $10–$50 per square foot for concrete block, $15–$30 for timber, $20–$25 for brick, $10–$40 for gabion and $20–$100 for natural stone, with drainage and waterproofing adding $2–$10 per square foot and site preparation adding $500–$1,000.

The line items people forget are the ones that make the project real: excavation and haul-away, drainage, edge restraint, joint sand, steps, and reinstating whatever the mini-excavator drove over. Fixr lists demolition and removal of existing hardscape at $10–$20 per square foot. If your quote has no removal line and you currently have a concrete slab there, that money has not disappeared — it just has not been counted yet.

Where cheap bids come from. Almost never from cheaper stone. Usually from shallower excavation, a thinner base, fewer compaction passes, no edge restraint, or no drainage behind a wall. Fixr puts retaining wall repair at a $250 to $1,250 typical range, and rebuilding failed sections at $70 to $125 per linear foot — so a saving of a few hundred dollars on base work is a genuinely bad trade.

How to choose

Compare per-square-foot, not per-project
Divide each bid by the actual square footage before you compare. Two bids for "the patio" are often for different sizes because one contractor quietly shrank the plan.
Price the base separately
Ask each bidder what the excavation depth and compacted base thickness is, and what that portion costs. It is the fairest apples-to-apples question in hardscaping.
Budget for drainage as part of the wall, not an extra
Fixr prices drainage and waterproofing at $2 to $10 per square foot of wall. A wall quote with no drainage line is not a cheaper wall, it is an incomplete one.
Expect a removal cost if something is already there
Tearing out and hauling away an old slab or deck is priced at $10 to $20 per square foot per Fixr. Make sure it is in the bid, not discovered on day two.
Treat outdoor kitchens as a house project
Fixr puts labor at roughly half the total on outdoor kitchens, with appliances averaging around $4,000 and countertops around $4,000. The masonry is the cheap part.

FAQ

Hardscaping cost — common questions

Still have a question? Talk to our team →

Fixr puts paver patios at $10 to $25 per square foot installed in 2026, within an overall patio range of $6 to $30 per square foot across all materials. The national average patio project is around $6,000, typically $3,000 to $8,000.
Fixr's 2026 national average is $5,463, with a typical range of $3,500 to $10,000. Per square foot of wall face that is $10 to $75, with $15 to $45 covering most residential jobs. Drainage adds $2 to $10 per square foot and site prep $500 to $1,000.
Fixr puts standard paver driveways at 25 to 50 years, and permeable paver systems at 35 to 100 years. That assumes the base was built correctly — a paver surface over a poor base can start moving within a few seasons.
Not necessarily. Fixr prices stamped concrete at $15 to $30 per square foot installed against $10 to $25 for concrete pavers. Plain concrete at $6 to $17 is the cheaper option; stamping is a finish upgrade, not a savings measure.
